Exercising and Weaves

Happy 2013 and I hope everyone is off to a Great start for the New Year!

As we embark on this new year, what are some of your goals, aspirations, or dreams? Most people use this time of the year to dedicate themselves to getting in better shape. However,  more black women put it off because of their hair. If you don't know, you no longer have to put off getting in shape and being a Slave to your hair. Extensions are one of the best options to protecting your hair while you work out. They are easy to manage and provide a great solution to bad hair days. Below are some recommendations for choosing the best type of hair, style and tips on maintaining your weave while you exercise.

Types of Hair and Styles

The best types of hair for extensions when exercising are  curly or wavy hair. Curly hair allows for those that swim or sweat a lot to easily manage their hair. It looks good both wet while you are working out, swimming or at the beach and when you are done, it dries fast and still holds its curly style. Wavy hair does the same however it is more versatile than curly. Typically, wavy hair can straighten out too so when you go from wet to dry you have the option of wearing soft waves or straightening it out with a flat iron.

Tips on Maintaining your Extensions

Two main reasons for maintaining your extensions are to conserve the longevity of the hair and to protect your hair underneath from damage. When working out or swimming, you must rinse your hair immediately to remove any chemicals from the water and/or your sweat. This should be done before your  hair has a chance to dry. After rinsing thoroughly, use a sulfate-free shampoo. This will prevent any further chemicals being added to the hair. If you do not have time to follow up with a sulfate-free conditioner, then I suggest using a leave-in conditioner to protect the extensions and your hair until you can properly condition it. The next step is Very important. Be sure to dry your hair especially your hair underneath your extensions. This is crucial because you do not want mold or mildew to set in due to damp hair. Style as desired using minimal heat. This may seem like a lot of steps but once you get into the habit of cleaning your hair properly, you will find that it is goes by quickly. One final tip - if you are just pressed for time and you can't get through all of the steps above, dry your hair thoroughly then use a dry shampoo to remove all the residue and style as desired. This is just a quick option to use only when necessary.

I hope all of these tips and suggestions work for you and that you will think about getting extensions as a solution to keep you on track with your fitness goals.

Happy New Year and let's make 2013 a transforming year from Hair to Toe!!
